Roman was born in New York City, the son of Alfredo Roman, a police officer of Puerto Rican descent, and Mary (née Charles), a teacher. When he was four years old, his father passed away; shortly after, his mother remarried and had three more children with George McDermott.
Before his family relocated to the Inwood neighbourhood of Manhattan at the age of 10, Roman resided in Washington Heights.
His ancestry is Puerto Rican and Irish. In The Bronx, he went to Cardinal Hayes High School and Incarnation School.
