Saidiya Hartman
American academic and writer (born 1961)
Saidiya Hartman (born 1961) is an American academic and writer focusing on African-American studies. She is currently a professor at Columbia University in their English department.[1][2] Her work focuses on African-American literature, cultural history, photography and ethics, and the intersections of law and literature.
Early life
Hartman was born in 1961[3] and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University and Ph.D. from Yale University.[4]
Career
Hartman worked at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1992 to 2006 in the Department of English and African American Studies.[3] In 2007 Hartman joined the faculty of Columbia University, specializing in African-American literature and history.[5] In 2020 she was promoted to University Professor at Columbia.[6]
